I'm very new to kitesurfing and came to it from Windsurfing for 8-9years. Learning iv tried Best Waroo's, North Neo's but wanted to get a decent progression kite in the 9-10m range. I'll be honest, I was put off a little by buying one from what I'd heard that it wouldn't be suitable for a rookie, but when an Airush one which was my first choice went out the window due to stock issues I plumped for the Smoke. How glad am I! The design is awesome: the kite looks like something out of batman. Build quality is spot on, carrot bar is clean, comfortable with my only minor gripe being the brain release is a bit sticky on mine. The relaunch balls are brilliant though...the quick relaunch is almost instant. It does have the tendency to unhook easily with the D D being a little flimsy. The main thing that impressed me was how manageable it was: I took it out in winds 24knots gusting 28 and had no problem controlling it at all...this was with depower not pulled in. I got outta shape once when I unhooked accidentally and letting go of the bar as if in effect pulling the release the kite flagged beautifully and the safety being elastic bungee was a dream to gather...this was on the stock safety but can be set up for suicide release/school safety if needed. I think this kite is aimed more for the unhooked rider but as a rookie I'm so glad I picked it...you would not be disappointed and i would consider buying a bigger one to add to the quiver. A well designed kite...great job Wainman!
At A Glance
The Smoke is the go to kite in the Wainman line up, boasting a huge range and offering performance in the waves, freestyle and freeride. The build quality on the Wainman kites has never been in question, and 2012 is no different. The construction is solid with reinforcement in all the right places. The kite also comes with plenty of trim options. You can fly the kite on the bridle which is recommended for wave riding, or set it up without the bridle for a more direct feel for freestyle. The kite has the long chord depth that the Wainman range is famous for and the leading edge sweeps all the way back to the wing tip. A great touch is the graphics on the inside of the kite, plus all the little attentions to detail. One surprise is the lack of one pump, Wainman are perhaps the only brand in the industry to have not come on board with this yet.
The Carrot Bar is a fantastic piece of kit, so simple, very effective and it feels great in the hands. The depower line is encased in plastic to prevent wear; the floats are integrated into the winders. The chicken loop is easy to grab and release and very simple to put bock together on the water. Safety is taken care of with a single front line safety system. For the depower there is a an above the bar clam cleat set up that works very well and is easy to reach.
On the Water
The Smoke is unique in the way it connects with the rider, the short lines on the bar no doubt helping you to feel the responsiveness of the kite. It moves around the window with a speed and agility that can catch you off guard at first, but once you get used to the turning rate then it almost becomes an extension of your arm. In the waves it is one of the most natural kites we have flown. Jumping is great the speed adding to the kites ability to wrench you off the water. In the air the kite is predictable and offers plenty of float, the wide chord depth of the canopy helping you there. Upwind is good, not amazing, the shape of the kite lending it to low-end power and grunt rather than upwind ability. When the wind is blowing though this isn’t a problem. The low end is good, top end is far better, we were comfortable when others were on 7m kites.
The Smoke is well-built, a little different, very responsive and direct, great for waves, freestyle and free ride.
One pump would make this kite almost perfect; the speed of the kite makes it more suited to Intermediates and Experts.
A great kite, it is easy to see why it is so popular. Direct, responsive and fast with almost limitless top end range.
I am very impressed with the Wainman kites, I started about a yr ago and with the Wainman as all the good things I had heard about it. Where I live, I see none of these kites. I took a chance and WOW, I mean, the Boss 12M well all I can say it has a huge wind range. I fly it when it 12mph or when its 25mph, that is how versitiale it is. I have tried to ride the 14M Epic and it will not do what the 12M Boss does for me, in light wind days.
So I went and demo'd a Smoke 9M. Well that kite is amazing, and did I mention amazing. the only kites that were out there in this 18mph day was some 12 and 14M. The guys looked at me..I am 185lbs and 5'11" of course I took out my 144 Chopstick. I walked it to the water, put on board and as I touched the bar I was already up and riding. I immediately pointed the board upwind, the harder I edged the harder it pulled, was no stopping this kite.. I really really think i could of rode this kite in 15mph winds. I have never been impressed by a kite in my life, and in the last yr with people I know, I have ridden alot of kites and different brands. If you have never tried a Wainman, I would not buy another kite till you ride one of these kites.. I know I am sold on this kite 101% and will never ever own nothing but the BEST. Wainman Kites rock.
